The Savagery of Love: Brother Antoninus Reads his Poetry (LP)
New York, NY: Caedmon, 1968. First Edition. Vinyl LP Record in Sleeve. An LP featuring spoken word recordings of William Everson (1912-1994), the great American poet, critic & craft printer who was at the center of the San Francisco Renaissance but with a twist—he was known as "Brother Antoninus," or "The Beat Friar," for having joined a Catholic order of monks, which he left in order to marry a young woman. This LP, which was recorded at Wesleyan University in April of 1968, features Everson near the end of his time as a friar. As a reader, he’s pretty interesting. For example, Brother Antoninus evinces a similar orality to the Slam Poets of late 1990s and early 2000s when yelling phrases like “NAILED TO THE MEXICAN CROSS!” (and other variations on this refrain) in the inaugural poem on the record’s first side, titled “The Way of Life and the Way of Death.” A fine Antoninus/Everson collectible. Vinyl LP Record in Sleeve: the First-&-likely only Pressing [or "First Edition," as we would say in the trade] of a key Everson collectible. Jacket in Near Fine condition with only minute-to-moderate rubbing, bumping & some bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners at select locales; otherwise, generally clean. Media in Fine-Very Fine condition with a few discernable short smudges & scratches on both sides, but the record plays great and would satisfy any collector. Fine-Very Fine / Near Fine. [Item #9066]
