An enormously interesting LP by David Amram (b. 1930), the great American composer, author, arranger, songwriter, & conductor in which he discusses his wide-ranging artistic activities (up to that point) and features samples of his then-new music. Among the intriguing stories Amram tells is one in which Bob Dylan (b. 1941) is living down the road from him and begins to invite him over for nightly jams after reading Amram’s 1968 memoir, Vibrations. While Amram is of course best known by Beat devotees for his involvement in the Robert Frank (1924-2019) Beat classic, Pull My Daisy, what’s more interesting about Amram is his extensive work as a sideman in American jazz during the mid-to-late 1950s. He played extensively with the great Charles Mingus (1922-1979), for example, who was a huge fan of Amram’s vibe and his playing. This record is for anyone who knows about David’s work (or thinks they know about David’s work) and wants to learn more. Dig it!
