Fallen Angels
Norwalk, CT: The Easton Press, 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by co-authors Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle & Michael Flynn. "Fallen Angels can best be described as a romp. The authors -all three of them- have had great fun writing it, and they want to share it with their readers." (James Gunn, Introduction). Fallen Angels is a near-future Science Fiction novel with a sharp satirical edge by American authors Larry Niven (b. 1938), Jerry Pournelle (1933-2017) & Michael Flynn (1947-2023). The novel argues that science & technology are humanity's salvation, not its enemy, which was a direct rebuke to the anti-progress politics the authors saw gaining traction in the early 1990s. It is polemical & intentional about this, blending thriller pacing with ideological argument. The book is unabashedly a love letter to Science Fiction fandom. Dozens of real fans, writers, and figures from the Science Fiction community appear by name or thinly veiled pseudonym (including Niven & Pournelle themselves). Fallen Angels rewards readers who know the culture deeply, but functions as an adventure story even for those who don't. The Niven-Pournelle partnership is one of the most productive in Science Fiction history. They met in the late 1960s and discovered they wrote well together with Niven bringing imaginative concept-driven ideas and Pournelle bringing military/political structure and plot discipline. Their collaborations include The Mote in God's Eye which is widely considered one of the finest first-contact novels ever written. Flynn's connection to the pair came through the SFWA (the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) convention circuit. He was recruited to help manage the scope of the three-way collaboration. All three authors shared a core ideological alignment: pro-space, pro-technology, skeptical of regulatory overreach, and committed to the idea that science fiction has a responsibility to make the case for humanity's future among the stars. With an introduction from Marvel Studios former head-honcho James Gunn (b. 1966). At signatory page, all three authors have signed their names in descending order in various shades/types of ink: "Larry Niven," "Jerry Pournelle" & "Michael Flynn." Leather-Bound Hardcover with Gilded Edging: First Edition per signatory page & title page ("This leather-bound First Edition is personally signed by..." & "Signed First Edition") first printing though not explicated as such thereon. A most collectible entry from a Science Fiction triumvirate in one of its rarest contemporary forms greatly enhanced by the three author's signatures. In relatively very fine condition with very minor occasion of scratching to text block. Interior very fine with one occasion of smudging (appx: 1") to center of verso half title page near fine edge; otherwise essentially mint. Very Fine. [Item #9091]
