Framed Broadside: The Quarry
n/p: Duncan McNaughton, n/d. Limited Edition. Framed Single Sheet. Offered today is a framed broadside of the poem The Quarry by Black Mountain School poet & Charles Olson (1910-1970) protege, Duncan McNaughton (b. 1942). McNaughton earned a Ph.D. in English and poetics at SUNY Buffalo, where he studied under Olson and worked with Olson's colleague Jack Clarke (1933-1992). He founded the Poetics Program at New College of California in San Francisco, CA and directed it for years, as well as founding/editing the influential little magazines Fathar and Mother (See Item No.s 2122 & 8967 for issues 1 & 2 of Fathar). McNaughton uses his characteristic plain & declarative voice, working against a grand mythic frame, which fits squarely in the Olson/Black Mountain lineage he came out of. He tends to reach for the classical & the elevated and then undercut it with a dry, grounded plainness. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who until recently was the foremost remaining authority on the aforementioned literary giant Olson, with whom we're honored to have been acquainted. Framed Matted Broadside (appx. 10.25" x 14" with frame; 13.5" x 2" with matting; 10.25" x 7" without frame). A most collectible Black Mountain School poetics broadside in its likely rarest contemporary form, with extremely relevant association & very distinguished provenance. In relatively very fine condition with no discernible flaws, essentially mint. Due to the weight and fragile nature of this item, an extra handling fee of $10.00 will be added for shipping. Very Fine. [Item #9170]
