He was 59 years old. On his death bed he asked his doctors for ten more years so that he could complete his life’s work as he saw it. That was not possible – and he probably knew it, too, in that uncanny way poets have of intuiting what is to come. In fact two years before his death, Olson had asked George Butterick, then a graduate student of his at the State University of New York in Buffalo, where Olson held a professorship during the mid-1960s, to come to Gloucester and help him sort his papers. A weekend magazine supplement of Essex County newspapers inc., which printed the Gloucester Daily Times, North Shore Magazine: Charles Olson, January 13, 1979 is an issue dedicated to the great Gloucester poet laureate. This number features a sketched portrait of Olson in a sort of wire-frame, thin, orange ink which gives the great Maximus Obscurantist a wiry, frantic, mad-scientist-esque look. Inside, the issue features: the above quoted “OLSON: His student perpetuates the poet’s work,” part a look at the final months of Charles Olson’s (1910-1970) life, part dedication to the late poet, and part interview with one of Olson’s closest students and acolyte, George F. Butterick (1942-1988) written and conducted by Peter Anastas (b. 1937); “OLSON: Scholars examine the man, his work” also by Anastas, that looks critically at the work of the great poet; “Singing for the Joy of It” by Sally Gibson, on The Cape Ann Singers; “Nature’s Individualist” by Ralph Scott on the Black-capped Chickadee; and “Sailing loner: An interview with Phil Weld of Gloucester” conducted by Bill Plante with Gloucester sailing legend Philip S. Weld (1914-1984), founder of Essex County Newspapers inc., among many other great contributions! From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who was the foremost living authority on literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we're honored to have been acquainted. Large-format newspaper. First & presumably only printing. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, slight discoloration due to age-toning throughout exterior & interior, and a single horizontal crease folding the magazine in half.
