Original Broadside: From Bob Marley's "Redemption Song"

n/p: n/p, n/d. unknown. Single Sheet. Offered today is a poster featuring lyrics from "Redemption Song," a song by Jamaican Reggae Musician Bob Marley (1945-1981), written in 1979. "Redemption Song" is the final track on Bob Marley and the Wailers' twelfth album, Uprising, released by Island Records. The song is considered one of Marley's greatest works with some key lyrics derived from a speech given by the Pan-Africanist orator Marcus Garvey titled The Work That Has Been Done. Musically it's a deliberate departure. Where almost all of Marley's catalog is full-band reggae, this is just his voice & acoustic guitar — no drums, no bass, no rhythm section. Its legacy is outsized for such a quiet recording. It became Marley's most covered and most quoted song, treated less as a reggae hit than as a secular hymn for anti-colonial and civil-rights movements. In 2024, Rolling Stone placed the song at number 42 among "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time." Although Third Mind Books was unable to discern much information about the origin of this poster, it is interesting to note that the possible date- "12/3" printed at the botttom right corner of the poster, is the date of an assasination attempt on Marley in Kingston, Jamaica in 1976. Seven armed men raided the Marley residence two days before Marley was to stage a concert in an attempt to quell recent violence. Politicians from across the political spectrum hoped to capitalize on Marley's support. While Marley remained neutral, many viewed him as tacitly supporting the prime minister Michael Manley and his democratic socialist People's National Party. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who until recently was the foremost remaining authority on literary giant Charles Olson (1910-1970), with whom we're honored to have been acquainted.
