" "It used to be cowboys would talk about horses/ doin' some pretty unusual things," Vernie Taylor says,/ "but since cow-dogs have come to this country,/ now it's dogs." " (first stanza) A broadside (appx. 11&1/2" x 17") with the poem "Alvin Taylor & Cowdogs" by poet-turned-cowboy & Anheiser-Busch heir Drum(mond) Hadley (1938-2015). The poem is charmingly conversational & written/spelled in true American cowboy vernacular. Hadley was a longtime friend of Beat Generation icons Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder & Lawrence Ferlinghetti; & was mentored by Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Hadley even contributed to the Curriculum of the Soul, a series of chapbooks with poems & essays in tribute to Olson, with Vision, the twenty-first entry in the series (see our item No. 9253). With image of cowboy-hatted (presumably) Hadley petting his horse, & facsimile signature below poem at lower right margin, very slightly slicing into border. First-&-only printing of unknown limitation. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, bibliographer, editor, publisher & academician who until his recent passing was the foremost remaining authority on Olson- he was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & thereafter held the Olsonian Torch high (including as publisher of the aforementioned Curriculum series). We are bereaved at the loss of our dear friend & mentor. A very scarce & desirable Hadley collectible; in its singularly rarest contemporary form & with the most highly distinguished, relevant association & provenance. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with several very faint horizontal creases where possibly once folded across surfaces; a few additional small, faint creases thereon; some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners.
