Original Exhibition Catalog: Jim Dine (Robert Fraser Gallery, London, 13 September- 15 October 1966)

London, England: Robert Fraser Gallery, 1966. First Printing. Clamp Binding. An exhibition catalog featuring reproductions of original artworks by Jim Dine (b. 1935), the Cincinnati, OH-born artist loosely affiliated with both the Pop Art and Abstract Expressionist movements. Dine’s love of poetry, which started when a sculpture professor Dine had in college played him a recording of the great Welsh poet (and notorious boozer), Dylan Thomas (1914-1953), is well-documented. Accompanying the reproductions of his work mentioned above are uniquely indented columns of critical prose and advertisements for / discussion of his show at the Robert Fraser Gallery in London during September and October 1966. Fraser is perhaps best remembered by fans of the Rolling Stones & The Beatles for getting arrested with Mick Jagger [b. 1943] and getting Paul McCartney [b. 1942] into cocaine. At any rate, according to a box of text near bottommost fine-edge of the work’s title page, Dine collaborated with the Scottish-Italian Pop artist, Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi (1924-2005) & the British sculptor, Michael “Mick” Cooper (1944-2025) on the completion of these works, which are Marisol Escobar-esque [1930-2016] masterpieces of Pop Art & sculpture. From the collection of Richard Cupidi (b. 1945), our esteemed mate in the UK who was the manager of the fabled Unicorn Bookshop in Brighton, England founded by Bill Butler (1934-1977, the famed American-expatriate poet, bookseller & publisher). From the late 1960s through the early 1970s, Unicorn proffered & published many outstanding productions by William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, et al., some of which have become the scarcest, all-but-unobtainable Beat-&-Beyond collectibles (see for example our item No.s 8217, 8366). After prevailing against censorious harassment efforts, Unicorn closed & Butler died in short order. Cupidi went on to found the Public House bookshop in Brighton, which had a long & successful run but which is also now closed, & he still resides there. We have been privileged to obtain what Cupidi has termed "The Last Hurrah," all the remaining gems of Unicorn & Public House, including this. Third Mind Books proceeds to reverently curate & incrementally present the Butler-Cupidi-Unicorn-Public House Legacy which is in our custodial hands- until it passes to yours. In Very Good condition with only mild-to-moderate shelf-wear, some light bumping & select, low-visibility exhibits of bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; similarly mild-to-moderate rubbing & age-toning to same (spotting, foxing, & artifacts related or similar to these present variously, throughout); otherwise, generally clean with interior unmarked.
