(opening stanza, Another Place, Max Finstein, pg. 31). 12 Poets & 1 Painter (Writing 3, 1964) is a chapbook of poetry edited by American poet Donald Allen (1912-2004), published by Allen's Four Seasons Foundation. Allen founded the foundation in 1964 as a vehicle to keep publishing the poets he'd canonized in The New American Poetry in 1960. He originally intended to create a little magazine; when that didn't materialize, the gathered material was redirected into the numbered Writing series. Writing 1 was Black Mountain School leader Charles Olson's A Bibliography on America for Ed Dorn (See Item No. 6604); Writing 2 was Prose 1 by Black Mountain/Beat Generation poet Ed Dorn and Black Mountain prose writer Michael Rumaker (See Item No. 6751); Writing 3 is this anthology and is essentially the salvaged contents of Allen's unrealized magazine. The 12 Beat Generation/Black Mountain poets featured in this compilation include: LeRoi Jones, Joanne Kyger, Robert Creeley (Novik, No. 620, pg. 97), Denise Levertov, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Morgan, B12, pgs. 136-137), Robert Duncan (Bertholf, B11, pgs. 139-140), Gary Snyder (McNeil, B7, pgs. 88-89), Lew Welch, Allen Ginsberg (Morgan, B24, pg. 111), Charles Olson (Butterick & Glover, B15, pg. 32), Max Finstein & Bruce Boyd. True standouts are Ginsberg's Last Night in Calcutta & S. S. Azemour (pgs. 27-28) & an excerpt from Olson's magnum opus Maximus (Maximus, at the Harbor, pgs. 29-31). American visual artist & husband of Duncan, Jess Collins is the "1 Painter," and he contributed six black-and-white drawings. From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder of the Detroit Artists' Workshop with the late, great John Sinclair (1941-2024). At top corner of title page along fine edge, Eichele has written his ownership signature in raven black ink "Robin Eichele."
