South Slocan, BC: Scree, 1971. First Printing. Loose Sheets. The October 1971 issue of the rare literary journal founded by poet,Fred Wah (b. 1939). Wah was born in Saskatchewan, CAN but grew up in British Columbia, earning a BA in English Literature from the university there before transferring on to the University of New Mexico, where he met Robert Creeley (1926-2005). Wah soon left UNM to join forces with the cluster of poetic descendants & appreciators of Charles Olson (1910-1970 ), then in ascendancy there. While at SUNY Buffalo, Wah published the mimeographed magazine,Sum, for which he is also remembered (see TMB Item No. 6941).Like the magazine Bezoar, issues of Scree are generally populated by friends, apprentices, and appreciators of Olson, and this issue is no different: featuring Ruth Fox, a poet and scholar associated with the Institute of Further Studies; noted poet & editor, Duncan McNaughton (b.1942); the Canadian poet & author, Brian Fawcett (1944-2022); and six poets about which little to nothing is known,including Craig McInnes; Bob Trostle; Gladys MacLeod; Nancy Rehrer; and Darryll White.An increasingly scarce Wah & Clarke collectible.From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Olson. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor. Mimeographed magazine in loose sheets, folded in thirds as issued: the First-&-likely-only Printing of the October 1972 issue ofScree.In strong Near Fine condition with only minor-to-moderate shelf-wear & some light bumping to fine-edges & corners of recto & verso sides; a few pin-hole like spots near top most fine-edge of issue “front cover” from where the staple was removed; Glover’s address in Canton, NY (in thin,black pen ink) present at/near center-middle of same; & moderate-to-enunciated age-toning present,variously throughout; some ink smudges from the printing process otherwise, generally clean with interior unmarked.
