Scree (March 1971)

South Slocan, BC: Scree, 1971. First Printing. Loose Sheets. Offered today is Scree (March 1971), an issue of the rare literary journal founded by American poet, Fred Wah (b. 1939). Wah was born in Saskatchewan, CAN but grew up in British Columbia, earning a BA in English Literature from the university there before transferring on to the University of New Mexico, where he met Black Mountain poet Robert Creeley (1926-2005). Wah soon left UNM to join forces with the cluster of poetic descendants & appreciators of Black Mountain School leading figure Charles Olson (1910-1970), then in ascendancy. While at SUNY Buffalo, Wah published the mimeographed magazine, Sum, for which he is also remembered (See Item No. 6941). Like the magazine Bezoar, issues of Scree are generally populated by friends, apprentices, and appreciators of Olson, and this issue is no different: featuring Duncan McNaughton (b. 1942), a student of Olson who wrote more than a dozen books of poetry the & founded the Poetics Program at New College of California in San Francisco and directed it until 1990. The Program brought in Beats Robert Duncan, Diane di Prima, and David Meltzer. McNaughton also founded and published Fathar, which ran seven issues starting in 1970 out of Buffalo (See Item No.s 2122, 8967 & 9411). For more issues of Scree see Item No.s 9297, 9299, 9301 et al. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Olson. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor. An increasingly scarce Wah & McNaughton collectible in its rarest contemporary form with relevant association & very distinguished provenance. Mimeographed magazine in loose sheets, folded in thirds as issued: the First-&-likely-only Printing of the March 1971 issue of "Scree." In relatively strong Near Fine condition with only minor-to-moderate shelf-wear & some light bumping to fine-edges & corners of recto & verso sides; a few pin-hole like spots along topmost fine-edge of issue “front cover” from where the staples were removed; Glover’s address in Canton, NY (in thin, blue pen ink) present at/near center-middle of same; & moderate-to-enunciated age-toning present, variously throughout; some moderate spot-staining to recto side, bleeding to verso, otherwise interior relatively unmarked.
