Iron No. 13 (Punk Issue, 1971) with: Ephemera

"What leads me to write of the Punks, of the Kozmic League, of the way teams moved all over the city, to the various Diamonds which were local & convenient & magical..." (Sharon Fawcett, from The Function of the Punks, unpaginated). Iron was a little magazine published out of the English Department at Simon Fraser University, edited by Norman Holmes Pearson (anonymous alias). Pearson was a loaded name to borrow, making a fairly pointed joke, either about literary authority and who gets to canonize, or about surveillance of the poetry scene, or both at once, as Pearson was the ultimate literary-establishment gatekeeper who was also, actually, a spy. Offered today is issue no. 13, Punk Iron, the Sacred Games issue, featuring prominent West Coast Canadian writers that were also teammates on the department's recreational baseball league ("The Punks"). Prolific Canadian novelist, poet, historian & biographer George Bowering (b. 1935) offers 4 poems: The Fourth Town, The First City, The Extractions & The Next Place. Canadian writer & cultural analyst Brian Fawcett (1944-2022) entices with The Ballpark, The Ridge & Some Notes on Canadian History in the West. Canadian poet & small-press revolutionary Karl Siegler writes a poetic letter to the Beat Generation's Jack Spicer A Letter to Jack Spicer and translates Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke's poems "II-27," "Sonnets to Orpheus" & "Cythere" for writing figures Colin Stuart, the aforementioned Fawcett & Robin Blaser. Plus many more baseball-themed entries. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970). Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. Third Mind Books is deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor. We have found & retained a piece of ephemera ("Magic Makes You Feel Outside;" Single sheets appx: 8" x 10," folded once horizontally) regarding recently (in 1971) released books & cannabis use while featuring a blurb from John Sinclair (1941-2024), one of the biggest advocates of cannabis legalization & personal friend of TMB, "Hot shit muthafucka; kick out the jams." Stapled Sheets: First Edition, presumed first-&-only printing. A most collectible small-press literary magazine in its most contemporary form, with relevant association & very distinguished provenance. In relatively fine condition with mild age-toning & moderate spot-staining mostly to fine edges of front, back covers & spine; mild-to-moderate creasing/bumping to corners of same; mild rusting of staples; mild-to-moderate age-toning, rubbing & spot-staining to text block.
