Voyagers III: Star Brothers
Norwalk, CT: Easton Press, 1990. Limited First Edition. Leatherbound. Signed by Ben Bova. “LATE in the afternoon of the longest day of the year a solitary man drove a sleek electrically-powered sports car southward from the city of Lima. Once past the growling snarl of urban traffic the car lifted off its four wheels and began skimming across the glass-smooth road surface on a layer of invisible energy that held it suspended a few centimeters above the ceramic-coated concrete highway. A cruel joke of nature had placed the Earth’s driest desert between the surging expanse of the Pacific Ocean and the snowcapped peaks of the Andes. The car sped down the curving coast road past the high sand dunes that heaped along the restless ocean shore, a shining silver projectile alone on the empty road. A late springtime mist clung to the huge ridges of sand, cold grey tendrils sliding in among the rugged seaside cliffs like the ghosts of long-forgotten ancestors…”--Ben Bova, “Prologue,” pg. 1. Ben Bova (1932-2020), was an almost unparalleled, legendary American writer and editor. A veritable master and pioneer of Science-fiction—with works like Exiled From Earth (1971); Orion (1984); and Powersat (2005)---editor of the titanic Analog Science Fact & Fiction & Omni magazines, and an incredibly prolific writer, having authored over 124 books across various genres, Bova is one of the most accomplished and respected Science-Fiction writers of all time; having won the Hugo award six times and the Robert A. Heinlein award in 2008. Bova also kickstarted the career of famed Fantasy & Sci-Fi writer, George R. R. Martin (author of the Song of Ice and Fire novels, more commonly known by the title of the first book/television series, a Game of Thrones), as well as fellow Sci-Fi titan Orson Scott Card (author of Ender’s Game, among many other legendary titles). Here is the 1990 Science-Fiction epic, Voyagers III: Star Brothers. The third and final installment in the Voyager Trilogy, Voyagers III follows Astronaut Keith Stoner as he returns to Earth after spending 15 years frozen in an alien spacecraft, merged with alien nanotechnology that gives him enhanced mental and physical abilities. Stoner must protect humanity from self-destruction while ruthless corporate and political leaders try to capture and control the alien technology inside his bloodstream. Written with Bova’s signature scientific-realism, hard sci-fi approach, and his journalistic approach to story-telling, Voyager III: Star Brothers is among Bova’s best works.
