Original Concert Postcard: The Who, Loading Zone (June 16-17, 1967)

This postcard (appx. 4 & 5/8" x 7”) designed by Bonnie MacLean (1939-2020) promotes a concert series which took place during June 16-17, 1967 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, California featuring The Who, Loading Zone and lights by Dan Bruhns Fillmore Lights, produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). MacLean was an American artist known for her classic rock posters. In the 1960s and 1970s she created posters and other art using the iconic psychedelic art style of the day. She continued her art as a painter focusing mostly on nudes, still lifes, and landscapes and her work has been placed alongside the "big five," Haight-Ashbury poster artists who were seminal to the iconography of the counterculture scene. The postcard artwork is a surreal depiction of eight cascading faces arcing from the upper right corner to lower left corner. The Who are an English rock band formed in London in 1964. Their lineup at the show consisted of all original band members, lead vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, impacting many bands, particularly those in the hard rock, punk, power pop and mod genres. They had previously played The Fifth Dimension Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 14, 1967. The Loading Zone was an American rock band of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They issued two albums worth of material, with differing band lineups, before disbanding in 1971. This postcard also advertises ("next week") the first Fillmore Auditorium appearance by American guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970), who was touring his recently released "Are You Experienced." "Are You Experienced" spent 33 weeks on the charts, peaking at number two. It was prevented from reaching the top spot by the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Verso features a postage square at top right corner as well as the Fillmore's address to top left corner. Single sheet: first edition, first printing with all points in King's Collector's guide. (BG-68-OPC-A, pg. 407) In relatively very fine condition with only minuscule bumps to the fine edges; verso is clean, though mildly age-toned; otherwise, pristinely mint. Very Fine. [Item #9345]
