Detroit, MI/New York City, NY: Theatre Program Co. of Detroit/Theatre Guild, 1942. Limited Edition. Staplebound. Offered today is The Playgoer Vol. 17 No. 7 (November 2, 1942) featuring iconic, 4x Oscar Award-winning American actress Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) in her new stage play Without Love. The Playgoer was a weekly theater magazine issued by the Theatre Program Company of Detroit. It served as the house program for the Cass Theatre while also carrying citywide theatre listings and advertising. The Cass Theatre was a working legitimate road house in that period. Its peak years ran through the 1940s, and it was one of the standard Midwest stops for Theatre Guild productions. Without Love was Philip Barry's play, produced by the Theatre Guild & was directed by Robert B. Sinclair. Hepburn played Jamie Coe Rowan opposite Elliott Nugent and it opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on November 10, 1942 and closed February 13, 1943 after 113 performances. The Detroit engagement was the final week of the pre-Broadway tryout, closing Saturday night and moving into New York the following Tuesday. Hepburn had turned 35 in 1942, and it was the year her comeback finished consolidating. It was the pivot point between the actress who'd been branded "box office poison" in 1938 and the woman who dictated her own terms for the next three decades. Detroit was seeing a woman who was, at that exact moment, the most conspicuously resurgent star in American pictures. With announcements for future performances & very nostalgic 1940s Detroit local business advertisements. Included in this bundle is the original Theatre Guild "Without Love" playbill featuring photographs & biographies of Hepburn & Nugent and their co-stars as well as playwright Barry & director Sinclair. A most collectible vintage bundle of Hollywood/Broadway memorabilia. [1] Staplebound: first-&-only printing.
