Stapled Wrappers. “The qanat spurts the geyser / & the mystery of the Celestial Rose / is spread like the wings of Nut. / One mixes but that is the source / of the Ritual, the candles and cards / in the brain, the oddments of study / the rejoicement when one can know / & the machinery of the Divine Conjoinment // First there is the realization of Conjoinment, / the Divinity is not certain in the Acid convulsions of Dream / & the Words form the utterance heard by the / Ear of Ears // I see the things held sacred by the Firmament / & they are the books in which is written / the Word / attended by the Angels of Sound / I shall reveal it: / [drawing of hand giving the middle finger]”--Ed Sanders, “Untitled Poem.” The Institute of Further Studies emerged during the fall of 1965 in Buffalo, NY, when George Butterick (1942-1988), John Clarke (1933-1992), Albert Glover (1942-2026), and Fred Wah (b. 1939) decided to continue their work with Charles Olson (1910-1970) after he had left SUNY-Buffalo and returned to Gloucester, Massachusetts. One result of their efforts was The Magazine of Further Studies, six issues of which appeared between 1965 and 1969. All issues were printed offset from stencils typed on an IBM Selectric typewriter on 8½ x 11 white stock and stapled within heavy paper covers cut from a roll of packing material. An image of some sort was then applied to the front cover. Issue no. 3 featured a patch of raccoon fur cut from an old coat; no. 6 presented one end of a piece of baling twine that led inside, etc. Offered today is the 1968 issue, Magazine of Further Studies No. 4. This issue features, like many other issues, an image affixed to the front cover. This particular image is a drawing of two malignant eyes surrounded by a number of small dots, evoking a sort of cosmic & almost bestial image; this simple, yet effective drawing is framed by an intentional tear in the middle of the front cover. This issue also features the following contributions: two untitled poems (one of which is quoted above) & “Fingers of the Sun” by Ed Sanders (b. 1939), American poet, singer, activist, author, publisher and longtime member of the rock band the Fugs; “Poem For Turning” & “Letter, October 18, 1967” by Fred Wah (b. 1939), Canadian poet, novelist, scholar and former Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate; “Proem” by George F. Butterick; “Drugs and the Unconsciousness" by John Wieners (1934-2002); an untitled poem by Ed Billowitz; and “By Fixes Only Move” by John Clarke (b. 1949), among many other great contributions. From the collection of the aforementioned Albert Glover, the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on the literary giant Charles Olson. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. Stapled Wrappers. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, slight staining/discoloration to front and back covers, and slight discoloration due to age-toning throughout interior and exterior.
