Original Concert Poster: Country Joe & the Fish, Albert King, Blodwyn Pig (October 9-12, 1969)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1969. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13&3/4" x 21") announcing a concert produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), with performances headlined by Country Joe & The Fish, Albert King, Blodwyn Pig, and visuals by the Brotherhood of Light in San Francisco during October 9-12, 1969 at the legendary Fillmore West. Designed by the acclaimed American artist, Randy Tuten (b. 1946), this poster features below the small black date at top of bottom pedestal “(c) Bill Graham 1969 No. 195 Design R. Tuten” in facsimile hand-lettering & numbering. According to the Talmudic scholarship which we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is from the first-&-only printing. King, BG-195-OP-1, pg. 535. King writes: “This poster is gray, white, screened green and maroon on a green background. The central image is based on a rectangular pillar made up of the lettering. Atop the pillar is an equestrian statue. There is also of [sic] photograph of Sproul Plaza on the University of California Berkeley campus facing north toward Sather Gate. This photograph was taken during an anti Vietnam War demonstration and shows police charging at the demonstrators. This is one of the most overtly political of all the Bill Graham Presents Posters.” (pg. 535) An unrepentant and unflinchingly political poster that encapsulates both the discontent around the Vietnam War & the sort of anti-imperialist political milieu that was reaching a boiling point by 1969 in its rarest & singular contemporary form. Single sheet broadside. First & only printing. In very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, otherwise pristine! Very Fine. [Item #9371]
