Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi, 2011. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed, signed & dated by Herb Snitzer to George Bornstein. "Glorious Days and Nights is a personal account of the fifty-year career of jazz photographer Herb Snitzer, with a special focus on his years in New York City from 1957 to 1964. A photojournalist for Life, Look and Fortune, Snitzer was the photo editor and later associate editor of the influential jazz magazine Metronome. During the 1960s, politics, race and social strife swirled in Snitzer's life as a working artist. But throughout the bus boycotts, demonstrations, and civil and racial unrest, what remained constant for him was jazz." (from front flap) A memoir & portfolio of photographs by Herb Snitzer (1932-2022), the great American photographer who captured all the Great Jazz Legends then-living in performance & sometimes casually offstage, especially in NYC during the 1950s-1960s. Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young & so many other Jazz Icons are described in Snitzer's fascinating memoir, then in his riveting photographs. Large hardcover in dust jacket, first edition, "First printing 2011" as stated at copyright page, a beautiful production. At blank upper left portion of left (first) page of title spread, Snitzer has hand-written this inscription, signature & date in bold black ink: "To George B.-/ A kindred spirit!/ (signed) Herb Snitzer 2011." "George B." is George Bornstein (1941-2021), an acclaimed American author, scholar & academician here at the University of Michigan who was a dearly missed friend of this writer. Apparently Snitzer & Bornstein were good friends as well (see also our item No.s 9405, 9407). An essential, rich & rewarding Snitzer Jazz collectible in its rarest contemporary form; greatly enhanced by his affectionate inscription, signature & date at year of publication, with very distinguished association & provenance. Interior very fine with only a hint of age-toning to blank margins/edges of page leaves. Dust jacket very fine with only very slight rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; light age-toning at blank white upper & lower margins/edges of flaps.
