Clearwater, FL: Notables, Inc., 1999. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed, dated & signed by Herb Snitzer to George Bornstein. "New York City, mid 20th - Century, the most dynamic of all American cities, ten years after the conclusion of WWII. The city was filled with enthusiasm, creativity, far from what we now call the conservative Dwight Eisenhower years, for they were anything but to this newly college graduated artist, moving to New York for very much the reason why most young people move to New York; to be a part of the nerve of their generation, to become successful, perhaps even well known in their worlds, and to eventually know and become friends with many other young men and women whose ambitions paralled their own." (excerpt, Introduction, pg. 3). Jazz: A Visual Journey is a collection of photographs of iconic jazz musicians by American photojournalist Herb Snitzer (1932-2022). Snitzer earned his BFA at Philadelphia College of Art in 1957. He then assisted abstract still life photgrapher Arnold Newman (1918-2006) in New York. He would go on to freelance for Life, Look, Fortune, Time & Saturday Evening Post. In 1959 he became the last photograph editor of jazz magazine Metronome (see Item No. 9405), the position that produced many of the photographs seen within. Jazz musicians featured include: Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Ernestine Anderson, BB King, Duke Ellington, Chuck Mangione, Pepper Adams and so many more. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief memory of the the artist featured as well as the location & date of the photograph. From the collection of the late, great George Bornstein (1941-2021), scholar, author & academician at the University of Michigan- a quintessential Man of Letters.
