Original Concert Poster: Jefferson Airplane, The Paupers (May 12-14, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. This poster (appx. 14” x 21;” King, BG-63-OP-1, pg. 402) designed by Bonnie MacLean (1939-2020) announces a 3-day concert (May 12-14) presented by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991) at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, CA. Headliners Jefferson Airplane, consisting of Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (rhythm guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals, keyboards), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums), were an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. They were one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock, defining the "San Francisco Sound" and were the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. Both their singles Somebody to Love & White Rabbit became major U.S. hits in 1967, the former reaching No. 5 and the latter No. 8 on the Billboard singles chart. By late 1967 Jefferson Airplane were national & international stars and had become one of the hottest groups in America. What they had originated was a romanticism for the electronic age; unlike the highly homogenized harmonies of the Beach Boys, Jefferson Airplane never strived for a synthesis of its divergent sensibilities. Joining the band at the concert was The Paupers, a Canadian psychedelic rock band comprised of drummer Skip Prokop, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Bill Marion, lead guitarist Chuck Beal and bass player Denny Gerrard, from Toronto, Ontario, who recorded between 1965 and 1968. They released two albums for Verve Forecast Records and appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival. The center of the poster features a sepia-toned photograph (taken by rock photographer Herb Greene) of Jefferson Airplane guitarist Kaukonen dressed up as a priest clutching a large, prominent cross necklace surrounded with a highly decorative illustrative framework that mimics the stone carvings, rose windows and pointed arches found in traditional Gothic architecture. Single Sheet: First Edition, first printing. A most collectible late 1960s-era, "Summer of Love" precursing concert poster in its rarest contemporary form. In relatively fine-to-very fine condition with very mild wear, rubbing & creasing to fine edges & corners of verso/recto; an appx. 1/2" enclosed tear at center of bottom fine edge; pinhole in both top corners & at center of bottom fine edge; "DOUBLE | 5/80" is handwritten in pencil at center of verso. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #9445]
