Los Angeles Free Press Pull-Out Supplement (November 29, 1974)

Los Angeles, CA: New Way Enterprises, Ltd., 1974. First Edition. Folded Sheets. Offered today is a pull-out supplement from the Los Angeles Free Press, the first and certainly the largest of the underground newspapers of the 1960s, featuring America's Duke of the Derelict, Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). The Los Angeles Free Press was Bukowski's best-known prose outlet, and this pull-out supplement features his long-running semi-autobiographical column Notes of A Dirty Old Man. The stories ranged from encounters with strangers and prostitutes to his interactions with fellow writers and occasional benefactors, offering insight into the life of a man navigating society’s margins while maintaining a fiercely independent voice. Many of the stories were later collected & published by Beat Generation enthusiast Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books with the same title. This particular column that begins "Harry's wife handed him..." (Debritto, B902, pg. 270) was later retitled Some Hangover for the book Hot Water Music. The book version opens: "Kevin's wife handed him the phone. It was Saturday morning. They were still in bed." So "Harry" became "Kevin," and the line "It was Saturday morning" was added. Also featured is Bukowski's response to a reader from the previous installment of Notes on a Dirty Old Man. A few weeks before the November 29 issue, the poet Lynne Bronstein criticized the satirical Bukowski story the paper had run. She accused him of contempt for women poets, among other barbs. Bukowski answered with twelve numbered points defending a writer's right to depict characters "any way he must." He also wrote that "the function of the artist is not to create optimism but to create art." With over 100+ contemporary sex work, dating & classified advertisements. Loose sheets folded once horizontally, tabloid-newspaper format, presumed first-&-only printing. A most collectible first publication from Bukowski's iconic "Notes on a Dirty Old Man" series. In relatively good-to-near fine condition with moderate age-toning & spot-staining mostly to fine edges of loose sheets. Good-Near Fine. [Item #9447]
