Renaissance No. 8 Supplement (c. 1971)

Los Angeles, CA: Open City/ John Bryan, c. 1971. First Printing. Loose Folded Sheets. " "Who is the third that walks beside you? The third column of time? Some wise guy come around to your own people with these 1920 scraps? HAVE BEEN IN DESPERATE BATTLE. We want to hear pay talk Daddy, and we want to hear pay talk NOW." " (William S. Burroughs, "Who Is the Third That Walks Beside You?," unpaginated) An extraordinarily scarce, quintessentially exemplary (albeit appropriately confusing) relic of the countercultural-underground newspaper era, vintage c. later 1971 or perhaps early 1972. Featuring "Who Is the Third That Walks Beside You?" by William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, among the foremost literary & cultural figures of all time, indeed the very Patron-Icon of our Third Mind enterprise named in his honor. An exemplary shorter piece rich with Burroughsian allusions & themes, first published in 1964 during the frenzy of WSB's cut-up period, but with one foot already in his later, relatively more lucid style. Maynard & Miles, C314, pg. 169; Shoaf, Section III, No. 183, pg. 142 (*with all due respect to the late Eric Shoaf, in this entry he mistakenly credits WSB for "O Hungry Self" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (see below) rather than this work, the second/last page of which shares with LF's poem & drawings); Schottlaender, C319, pg. 66. Also in this supplementary issue are contributions of poems, prose & politically charged essays by leading Beat-&-Beyond figures including several poems in the "Revolutionary Letters" series by Diane di Prima; Lawrence Ferlighetti's facsimile hand-written poem with drawings "O Hungry Self" (see above, Morgan, C303, pg. 203); Allen Ginsberg ("Hiway Poesy-LA-Albuquerque-Texas-Wichita," Morgan, C560, pg. 253); Tuli Kupferberg; (about by whom?) Timothy Leary; Harold Norse; John Sinclair; Gary Snyder ("Spel Against Demons," McNeil, C357, pg. 143) & yet many more. Per roster at verso final leaf/ back cover, this supplement is chiefly edited by John Bryan (1934-2007), the renowned & prolific American editor, journalist & publisher known in Los Angeles & San Francisco as "The King of the Underground Press." From what we're able to decipher, this supplement was related to The Sunday Paper (a version of Bryan's famous Open City newspaper), one of Bryan's many productions. Loose sheets folded once horizontally, tabloid-newspaper format, presumed first-&-only printing. A downright legendary literary-countercultural collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form; of utmost interest especially to the Third Mind Burroughsian. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with inevitable moderate-to-significant age-toning to all surfaces esp. at margins/edges of old newspaper-quality paper stock; mostly very slight wear at edges & corners esp. fold-corners; several very short, closed horizontal tears at left edge of final leaf incl. back cover. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #9449]
