Coltrane: The Story of a Sound

ISBN: 9780374126063
New York, NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. A biography of Jazz titan, John Coltrane (1926-1967) by noted music writer (& former New York Times Jazz critic), Ben Ratliff (b. 1968). Ratliff’s biography, as its title implies, traces the evolution of Coltrane’s work; devoting particular focus to the saxophonist’s time with Miles Davis (1926-1991) & Thelonious Monk (1917-1982). Ratliff also contributes meaningfully to the discussion of Coltrane’s influence over time: dissecting how Coltrane’s early death and subsequent Bop sainthood contributes to the mediation of his art & our understanding of the man to this day. A valuable all-purpose biography by a great American music critic. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970). Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor.
