Ascension: John Coltrane and his Quest
ISBN: 0306806649
New York, NY: Da Capo Press, 1995. First Softcover Edition, First Printing. Softcover. A biography of Jazz titan, John Coltrane (1926-1967) by noted music writer, Eric Nisenson (1946-2003). Nisenson’s biography, as its title implies, focuses on Coltrane’s evolution from a primarily R&B and hard bop saxophonist to a trailblazing exemplar of Free Jazz. Nisenson clocks this transformation as beginning in 1957, the year Trane kicked junk, and considers his 1965 album, “Ascension” (as the title of this work implies) to be among the peaks of his artistry, if not his finest work. A nonstandard, valuable look at Coltrane by a competent Free Jazz devotee. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970). Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor. First Trade Softcover Edition (“First Da Capo Press edition 1995”), First Printing: published two years after the St. Martin’s Press (First Hardcover) edition of 1993. In strong Near Fine condition with only mild-to-moderate shelf-wear & some light bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; similarly mild-to-moderate age-toning, rubbing, a few scattered nicks & scuffs to same at select locales; Glover’s pasted-down ex-libris placard present at center-middle of front cover at interior; otherwise, clean with interior unmarked.
