Original Concert Poster: Santana, Collectors, Melanie (February 13-16, 1969)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1969. First Edition. Single Sheet. This poster (appx. 14” x 21;” King, BG-160-OP-1, pg. 502) designed by Greg Irons (1947-1984) announces a 4-day concert (February 13-16) presented by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991) at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, CA. Headliners Santana were an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California in 1966 by Mexican-American guitarist Carlos Santana (b. 1947). The band has had various recording & performing line-ups in its history, with Santana being the only consistent member. The other band members during this show were organist & lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, percussionists José "Chepito" Areas, drummer Michael Shrieve & bassist David Brown. In December 1968, Santana performed a series of concerts at the Fillmore that were recorded for a proposed live album and it marked Santana moving away from its blues & R&B roots towards the "Santana sound" with the addition of Afro-Cuban and jazz numbers into their sets. Following this 1969 concert, Santana would play at Woodstock, immensely increasing their profile and helping them to become one of the best-selling groups of all time, with over 47 million certified records sold in the US and an estimated 100 million sold worldwide. Joining the band at the concert was Collectors, a Canadian psychedelic rock band consisting of Howie Vickers on lead vocals, Bill Henderson on lead guitar, recorder, keyboards & lead vocals, Claire Lawrence on tenor saxophone, harmonica, keyboards, flute, organ, recorder & vocals, Glenn Miller on bass & vocals, and Ross Turney on drums & percussion; and Melanie (1947-2024), an American singer-songwriter & guitarist widely known for the 1971–72 global hit "Brand New Key." The surreal design is red, tapering shades of red to yellow, gray and black on a yellow background. The central image is a street scene involving cars, buildings, and a cut away view of an apartment house showing the people inside. Above this is a photograph of the members of Santana. Single Sheet: First Edition, first printing. A most collectible late 1960s-era, Woodstock precursing concert poster in its rarest contemporary form. In relatively very fine condition with very mild wear, rubbing & creasing to fine edges & corners of verso/recto. Very Fine. [Item #9470]
