Stroker No. 61 (1997)

Nagano, Japan: Stroker Magazine, 1997. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "Train whistle blowing | Lightning bugs glowing | River | still | flowing" (Porch Song, Stephen DiLauro, pg. 53). This number of the literary-cultural-art journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features a deep, variously insightful excerpt from Men God Forgot, a short-story collection written by Albert Cossery (1913-2008), the Egyptian-born French writer (pgs. 3-22). Also in this issue are contributions of poetry, prose & illustration including JM Bonnamy's short story Universe Jumping (pgs. 24-30); American playwrite Stephen DiLauro's (b. 1950) poem Porch Song (quoted above, pg. 53); 4 drawings from French contemporary artist Christine Maillot (pgs. 23, 31, front & back covers) & One Eye on the Clock, Other on Eternity (pgs. 32-53), an excerpt from Stettner's work-in-progress book On the 2nd Avenue Patrol. With a contemporary ad for Angelica Kitchen & subscription information on endpage following contributions. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. Another quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era in its singularly rarest contemporary form. In relatively quite very fine condition with only light rubbing, faint scratching, occasional faint creasing & a hint of age-toning to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; very slight age-toning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only very light age-toning to blank inner covers & page leaves (the latter chiefly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves. Very Fine. [Item #9487]
