The Marriage Plot with: Ephemera
ISBN: 9780374203054
New York, NY, USA: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2011. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. "It's the early 1980s- the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafes on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling (Jacques) Derrida, and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels." (from front flap) An acclaimed novel by Jeffrey Eugenides (b. 1960), the popular, Pulitzer Prize-winning American author. Amid the later 20th century atmosphere of ennui among college students where the heroine wonders "...why "it became laughable to read writers like (John) Cheever and (John) Updike, who wrote about the suburbia Madeleine and most of her friends had grown up in, in favor of reading the Marquis de Sade..." (from front flap), she pursues a classic "Marriage Plot" of her own with her lost & confused generation of young men, that continues to unfold after their graduation. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, "First Edition, 2011" as stated at copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon. From the collection of George Bornstein (1941-2021), an esteemed author, scholar & academician here at the University of Michigan who was a dearly missed friend of this writer. We found & have retained, between rear endpaper verso & paste-down, a full-page enthusiastic review of this volume by Anna Clark from the October 23, 2011 issue of the Detroit Free Press newspaper, single sheet much-folded in relatively very fine condition with only inevitable age-toning of surfaces. I myself briefly met Eugenides around this time in Ann Arbor, & found him to be a fine & friendly fellow who happens to be a most-gifted novelist. An essential, rich & rewarding Eugenides collectible in its rarest contemporary form; with relevant ephemera & highly distinguished provenance. Book in relatively very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; two very short, closed vertical tears at lower right edge/corner of back cover; small areas of light rubbing at upper edge of text block. Interior very fine, appearing substantially mint. Dust jacket very fine with only very slight rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same & flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine.
