Even a Rag Like This Vol. 1 (June 1960)

Needham, MA: Needham High School, 1960. First Printing. Softcover. The first issue of the Needham, MA-based student journal, Even a Rag Like This, founded in 1960 as an outlet for publishing the art and literature of high school students. The journal, which remarkably continues publication to this day, is now simply known as The Rag. Of interest to collectors are the contributions to this issue by two key apprentices of Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great (in girth & poetic profundity) Black Mountain-&-Beyond American poet & essayist; the Supreme Exemplar of Maxim(us)al Obscurantism whom we revere like a Sphinx. The apprentices in question are Albert Glover (1942-2026), the late, great American poet, editor, bibliographer, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Olson; and Duncan McNaughton, who, like Glover, was not only a poet, scholar and small press editor, but also was a key apprentice to Olson, himself during the late 1960s. A rare McNaughton/Glover collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Albert Glover, who was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch. We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend & mentor. Trade-format softcover original: the First-&-likely-only Printing of a unique Glover/McNaughton collectible. In strong Very Good-Near Fine condition with only mild-to-moderate shelf-wear, & select, low-visibility exhibits of bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; a few generally low-impact exhibits of nicks & scuffing to same; similarly mild-to-moderate rubbing & age-toning (spotting, foxing, yellowing, & artifacts related or similar to these) present variously, throughout; asterisks composed in red pen (in Glover’s hand) present alongside the poems credited to him in the anthology’s table of contents section; former owner's signature at top right-hand corner of epigraph page; otherwise, generally clean with interior unmarked. Very Good-Near Fine. [Item #9507]
