San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1969. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 22 & 1/16") announcing a concert produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), with performances headlined by Fleetwood Mac, and SRC during August 5-7 & Jr. Walker & His All Stars, Lee Michaels, and Tony Joe White during August 8-10 at the legendary Fillmore West in 1969. Designed by the acclaimed and pioneering rock poster artist, David Singer, who designed over 75 posters for Graham, blending surreal imagery with meticulous hand-lettering, creating visual representations of the psychedelic music scene. This poster features, at bottom-most left-hand corner, “(c) Bill Graham 1969 #185 Design David Singer” in facsimile hand-lettering & numbering. According to the Talmudic scholarship which we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is from the first-&-only printing. King, BG-185-OP-1, pg. 525. King writes: “This poster is several shades of gray, several shades of red, several shades of olive, black and white in an olive frame. The central image is an archway beyond which is a view of a red sunset sky with the moon in it. There is also a gray plain with a shadow of a horse’s head and a rider. One of the horse’s front legs is also in the shadow. Horses were another of Singer’s favorite images. The card for this image and No. 184 were printed as a pair.” (pg. 526) a classically surreal, psychedelic poster that encapsulates the aesthetic & sensibilities of the late 1960s in its rarest & singular contemporary form.
