H& (February 1970, Two Editions)
Hove, England: Caliban Press, 1970. First Printing. Near Fine; Good-Very Good. Two editions of a literary journal edited & published by Caliban Press in Hove, England (the sister city to the more famous Brighton) featuring works by Lee Harwood (1939-2015); Barry MacSweeney (1948-2000); Peter Riley (b. 1940); Jeff Keen (1923-2012); Jim Duke (1939-1992); & Ted Kavanagh. Collectors should be aware that this Caliban Press is not the same as the Caliban Press founded by Mark McMurray in New York; and, that it’s not affiliated with the literary journal Caliban founded in Ann Arbor, MI by Lawrence R. Smith. A unique one-shot from a key outpost of the small press movement and Mimeograph Revolution in the UK. From the collection of Richard Cupidi (b. 1945), our esteemed mate in the UK who was the manager of the fabled Unicorn Bookshop in Brighton, England founded by Bill Butler (1934-1977, the famed American-expatriate poet, bookseller & publisher). From the late 1960s through the early 1970s, Unicorn proffered & published many outstanding productions by William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, et al., some of which have become the scarcest, all-but-unobtainable Beat-&-Beyond collectibles (see for example our item No.s 8217, 8366). After prevailing against censorious harassment efforts, Unicorn closed & Butler died in short order. Cupidi went on to found the Public House bookshop in Brighton, which had a long & successful run but which is also now closed, & he still resides there. We have been privileged to obtain what Cupidi has termed "The Last Hurrah," all the remaining gems of Unicorn & Public House, including this. Third Mind Books proceeds to reverently curate & incrementally present the Butler-Cupidi-Unicorn-Public House Legacy which is in our custodial hands- until it passes to yours. Literary journal string-bound in wraps: two variations of the First-&-likely-only Printing of H&. Smaller variation in strong Near Fine condition with only minute-to-moderate shelf-wear, some light bumping & occasional bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; mild-to-moderate age-toning (yellowing, spotting, foxing, & artifacts related or similar to these) present variously, throughout; otherwise, generally clean with interior unmarked. Larger variation in Good-Very Good condition with generally mild-to-moderate shelf-wear, some light bumping and a few more pronounced exhibits of bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; similarly mild-to-moderate age-toning (yellowing, spotting, foxing, & artifacts related or similar to these) present variously, throughout; string binding coming loose at bottom loop of front cover, and small blue ink spot present at/along the same spot on back cover; several uncut pages throughout (indicative of the fact that this was, in essence, a pre-production proof copy before the printer had settled on the smaller format); otherwise, generally clean with interior unmarked.
